Indian Republic Day; When a democratic nation was born on this earth.
After the bitterly cold weather, the morning of January 26, 1950 saw a cold but clear sunny day in the capital city of New Delhi. India's defining moment – the day it became a truly sovereign nation completely free from the shackles of colonialism – was three years after its independence. During the two and a half years after independence... to be precise between August 15, 1947 and January 26, 1950, India was under a constitutional monarchy. When it was officially known as the 'Dominion of India' and unofficially as the 'Union of India', India was still ruled by King George VI of Britain. India also had two Governor Generals during that period, Lord Mountbatten (1947-48) and C Rajagopalachari (1948-50). During this period Jawaharlal Nehru held executive power as the head of government as the Prime Minister of the Indian Union and ruled the country through the Government of India Act (1935). That narrow period between independence and sovereignty came to an end on January 26, 1950. That day when a democratic nation was born on this global earth with a different constitution starting with "WE THE PEOPLE".
